Personal Counselling Cell

Introduction
Shri Bhawani Niketan P.G. College (SBN) has a Career and Personal Counselling Cell for students. As per the guidelines and recommendation of UGC XI th   plan, the Career and Personal Counselling Cell was established in our college. The Counselling Cell at Shri Bhawani Niketan P.G. College fosters the emotional, psychological, and academic well-being of students. It provides a confidential, safe, and supportive environment for students to seek guidance on personal, social, and academic challenges. The cell promotes mental health awareness and holistic development through individual and group counselling sessions, workshops, and seminars, empowering students with coping strategies and emotional intelligence to navigate college life with confidence and resilience.

Another goal of this cell is to make students aware of many job opportunities and also to train them through workshop, seminar and orientation programme in collaboration with some agencies or companies. Some of the students are offered job after such training by agencies. Counselling of students imparts to the students practical knowledge, confidence and a sense of social communication as well as responsibility and reshapes their views and visions. It also improves their overall wellbeing like academic, personal and social, emotional as well as intellectual development. The cell always supports the students to cope with serious mental health issues and build trust, commitment and understanding within them.

Vision
To serve as a counselling cell that inspires and equips students to achieve their full potential, both personally and academically. We envision a campus community where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.

The cell actively functions to develop soft skill and communication ability in competitive examinations, on-job training and vocational training among the students.  Different counselling programmes make the students mentally strong and meet their need in different academic, personal, social and emotional development.

Mission
The mission of the cell is-

  • To help, support, guide and assist students to develop life skills to cope up with different challenges
  • Enhance their personality by making them not just excellent professionals but also good human beings with proper understandings, reasoning and regards for human values.

Objectives
The objectives of the cell are:

  • To provide professional and ethical counselling services to students.
  • To support students in dealing with academic stress, emotional distress, and personal concerns.
  • To attain personal and professional excellence of the students in the context of new changed perspective towards the challenges of life,
  • To promote mental health awareness and encourage healthy coping mechanisms.
    To help students become self-sufficient and motivated in future life.
  • To ensure a confidential and non-judgmental space for students to express their concerns.
  • To ensure their success, happiness and well-being.

Functions of Counselling Cell

  • Personal Counselling: Adequate online/offline counselling provided by the cell to help and guide the students. One-on-one sessions for emotional, social, and academic concerns.
  • Group Counselling: Workshops, seminars and peer support group. Career guidance, training and skill sets to students to find the right job. Resource persons are invited with the consent of the college authority
  • Crisis Intervention: Immediate support in cases of emotional distress. Meet with a counsellor in mental health crisis.
  • Wellness Programs: Activities promoting mindfulness, stress management, and emotional well-being. Manage their immediate concerns and anxiety during examination. Study materials along with PPT and video lectures are also supplied to the students. The cell acts for the students from their career planning to relationship problems and stress and health issues.

Procedure for Accessing Counselling Services

  • The cell operates 6 days in a week.
  • Students can contact with the members of the Cell both in online and offline modes.
  • The students can schedule appointments via email, online portal, or in person at mutually convenient time during college hours with the counsellors and receive appointment.
  • Interested students may also consult relevant magazines, journals and literatures available in our college library and website.
  • The professors of SBN and resource persons of different institutions also guide and enlighten the students regarding the future scopes and subject matters in a regular basis.
  • Information is conveyed to the students through notice in the college campus as well as in college website.

The Counselling Cell encourages the students to understand themselves and the issues that trouble them and guides them to resolve their problems. These problems can be personal, emotional, social, family, peer, academic, sexual, etc. The cell offers free counselling to students on an individual or group basis to help them with academic goals, positive attitude towards building mentor- mentee relationships, social and personality development, career goals, enhancing listening skills, empathy, and interpersonal skills for healthy relationships and lifestyle. The Counselling Cell will function by respecting the student’s privacy so that they are free to explore their concerns, feelings, and behaviours.

Key functions of the Counselling Cell include:

  • To counsel students through individual counselling sessions based on their needs.
  • To enhance the self-esteem of weaker /slow learners / physically challenged students.
  • To help the students to overcome examination stress, anxiety, or phobia.
  • To recommend and refer to a Clinical Psychologist or Professional Psychiatrist in case of any advance support is required considering the severity.
  • To inform the parents about the psychological misbehaviour of the student.
  • To help the students solve their personal, educational, social, and psychological problems.
  • To assist the student in planning for educational and vocational choices.
  • To help the students know themselves regarding their interests, abilities, aptitude, passion, and opportunities.
  • To create awareness, prepare, and motivate to make success stories and decipher plans to overcome life challenges.
  • To establish a feeling of mutual understanding between student and teacher.
